Sail switch lockout

Suburban Furnace: “Sail switch lockout”

warning RV furnace fault codes

Safety This is a safety interlock that prevents the burner from firing without proven combustion airflow. Do not bypass, jumper, or defeat the sail switch — doing so can allow combustion without adequate venting, risking soot, carbon monoxide, or fire. Always leak-check gas connections after any service.

What it means

On the 12 VDC Fan Control module board, after the thermostat calls for heat the board first confirms the sail switch is open, then starts the blower and waits for the sail switch to close (proving airflow). If the sail switch circuit does not close within 30 seconds of the blower starting, the board treats it as a no-airflow fault, goes into lockout, and shuts the blower down. No spark or gas is allowed because the airflow needed to support and exhaust combustion was never proven.

Most likely causes

  1. Dust or lint buildup on the sail switch paddle/blade so it sticks and will not 'sail in' most likely
  2. Dirty or dragging blower wheel reducing motor RPM below the ~75% needed to close the switch common
  3. Low supply voltage so the motor never reaches the RPM needed to generate sufficient airflow common
  4. Restricted return air or kinked/over-bent ducting so airflow bounces the switch instead of holding it closed common
  5. Reversed polarity making the motor run backward with too little air delivery less common
  6. Failed/stiff sail (micro) switch or broken wiring to it less common

Safe checks you can do yourself

How to reset / clear Sail switch lockout

  1. Turn the wall thermostat OFF (or the furnace off) and let the blower come fully to a stop.
  2. Wait 10-30 seconds so the board clears the lockout.
  3. Turn the thermostat back up above room temperature to restart the full ignition sequence.

When to call a technician

If voltage, airflow, and a clean/free sail switch all check out but the furnace still locks out within ~30 seconds, have a qualified RV technician test the switch, motor, and module board.

What is the most common cause of Sail switch lockout on a Suburban Furnace?

The most likely cause is dust or lint buildup on the sail switch paddle/blade so it sticks and will not 'sail in'.

Note: The 30-second sail-switch lockout window is specific to the modern 12 VDC Fan Control module board described in the SF service manual. Older NT boards and the 24 VAC park-model board behave differently (the 24 VAC board runs the blower continuously until the sail switch closes rather than locking out).
