RV water heater error codes: two of the four makers show no code at all
Half the RV water heaters on the road cannot display an error code at all. They have one red lamp and no digits, so searching for "the code" is searching for something that was never there. What they do have is a lockout rhythm you can hear, and that identifies the unit as reliably as a number would.
The fastest identification: look at the drain plug
Suburban builds a porcelain-lined steel tank, and steel needs sacrificial protection — so a Suburban carries an anode rod screwed into the drain plug, and it is a wear part. Atwood, now part of Dometic, builds a clad aluminium tank and states in its own service manual that the cladding replaces the anode and does not need yearly replacement. So: a fat metal rod hanging off the drain plug means Suburban. A plain plug with nothing on it means Atwood. This is worth getting right before you buy anything — fitting an anode rod to an aluminium Atwood tank is not a harmless upgrade, and Atwood positions the cladding as the anode equivalent, not as something an anode should be added to.

A two-character E code on a wall panel
A user control panel inside the coach with a temperature setting and a digit display means a Girard tankless unit. It is the only one of the four with a real numeric code set, E0 through E9.
Codes like W17H, W255H or E202H
Letter-plus-multi-digit codes belong to Truma — a Combi heating and hot water unit or an AquaGo. A W is a warning the unit keeps running through; an E is an error that stops it.
A lockout light, and it tried three times
Suburban. Its board allows the first attempt plus two more before locking out, and on a three-try system each cycle runs a 15-second purge before the spark. Listen for it: purge, spark, pause, repeat, three times over.
A lockout light after a single 6–8 second attempt
Atwood, now Dometic. The board energises the gas valve and the electrodes together for 6 to 8 seconds. If no flame is sensed in that window it locks out immediately — no second attempt — and lights the non-ignition lamp at the ON/OFF switch.
A lockout lamp is not a fault code and does not tell you why. It only tells you the board asked for a flame and did not get one. The cause is upstream: gas, spark, or the flame sense path.
Count the attempts — it is the code the light does not show
The two lamp-only makers can still be told apart, and told apart from a genuine gas fault, by how the appliance behaves in the ten seconds after you switch it on. Atwood documents a single trial for ignition: gas valve and electrodes energised together for six to eight seconds, and if the electrodes do not sense a flame in that window the board shuts the gas and goes to safety lockout. One attempt, then done.
Suburban documents the opposite: if the burner does not light, the system automatically attempts two more tries before lockout, and on a three-try system each ignition cycle begins with a 15-second purge before the spark cycle. So a Suburban audibly works at it for the better part of a minute; an Atwood gives up in under ten seconds.
Girard sits between the two: the board sparks for the full seven seconds, then closes the gas, purges for about 30 seconds, and makes one more attempt before it declares E1. That intermediate rhythm — spark, long silence, spark, then a number appears on the panel — is unmistakable once you know to listen for it.
Both lamp-only makers reset the same way, with different waits
Suburban: switch OFF, wait five seconds, switch ON. That restarts the ignition cycle. Its manual also makes a point that saves a lot of pointless diagnosis — the first start-up after the gas system has been opened may need several ignition cycles before the air is purged out of the lines. A brand new or freshly serviced installation that locks out twice and then runs is behaving normally.
Atwood: switch off and back on, but let the water cool first if the lockout came with heat. The relevant thresholds are all in its manual: the thermostat opens at roughly 140 °F, the ECO — the backup high-limit switch — opens above 180 °F, and the thermal cut-off is a one-shot fuse that blows at 190 °F. That last one matters. It is not a switch you reset; once it trips, it is replaced, and it trips because something blocked the burner or the flue rather than because the appliance was unlucky.
One shared electrical figure is worth checking before anything is replaced on either brand: the Atwood gas valve needs at least 10.5 VDC to open. A tired battery that still runs the lights can be too weak to open a gas valve, and the symptom is an ignition lockout that looks exactly like a gas fault.
The Girard code that is not a fault
Girard tankless units run a system timer. After 20 minutes of continuous operation the board shuts the burner down and shows "En" on the user control panel. Nothing is broken, nothing needs a part, and it clears with a soft reset: turn the hot water tap off and back on again.
It is worth naming because of when it happens — in the middle of a long shower, the exact moment when a water heater appearing to fail feels most like a real failure. A tankless unit that heats perfectly for twenty minutes and then stops is doing what it was designed to do.
Which brand is behind the panel in your coach
Atwood water heaters have been part of Dometic since 2014, so a unit badged or invoiced as Dometic may be an Atwood design with Atwood service literature — worth knowing when a parts list or a manual search comes up empty under one name.
Girard sits under Lippert, which is the same corporate parent as Furrion and Everchill. That has no effect on the codes, but it explains why the same troubleshooting documents turn up on Lippert’s support site rather than under the Girard name.
Truma is the European unit of the four. In a European caravan or motorhome it is usually a Combi, which heats the air and the water from one appliance — meaning a water fault and a heating fault come out of the same code list.
Common questions
My RV water heater has no display. Where is the error code?
There probably is not one. Suburban and Atwood units signal a failed ignition with a single lockout lamp and no digits at all. Only Girard tankless units and Truma appliances display codes. On a lamp-only heater, the diagnostic information is in the behaviour: how many ignition attempts you hear before it gives up.
How do I tell a Suburban from an Atwood water heater?
Pull the drain plug. Suburban uses a porcelain-lined steel tank with an anode rod attached to the drain plug; Atwood uses a clad aluminium tank with no anode and a plain plug. The number of ignition attempts is the other tell — Suburban tries three times with a purge between each, Atwood tries once for six to eight seconds.
Should I put an anode rod in my Atwood water heater?
No. Atwood states in its own service manual that the clad aluminium lining provides the tank protection and does not need replacing like an anode rod does. The anode rod belongs to the steel-tank design that Suburban uses; adding one to an aluminium tank is not the same maintenance job and is not what the manufacturer specifies.
Why does my Girard tankless heater stop after 20 minutes and show "En"?
That is the system timer, not a fault. The board ends the burn after 20 minutes of continuous operation and displays "En". Turning the hot water tap off and back on resets it and the unit runs again.
My water heater locks out on the first try but works on the second. Is something wrong?
Usually not, especially after a propane bottle change or any work on the gas system. Suburban notes that the first start-up may need several ignition cycles before all the air is purged from the lines. A lockout that clears on a retry and then behaves for the rest of the trip is air, not a fault.
The water heater will not light and the battery seems fine. What is worth checking?
Measure the actual voltage rather than trusting the lights. Atwood specifies a minimum of 10.5 VDC to open the gas valve; a battery that comfortably runs LED lighting can sit below that under load. The failure then looks like a gas or ignition problem when it is a supply problem.
