Onan generator fault codes: reading the blinking status light

An Onan RV genset reports every abnormal shutdown by blinking the status light in the control switch. Counting the blinks is easy; knowing which table to read them against is the part that goes wrong.

After a fault shutdown the lamp repeats a short group of blinks. If that group is three, the real code is still hidden: press Stop once and the lamp blinks the two-digit second-level code — one to five blinks, a brief pause, then one to nine blinks. The first group is the tens digit, the second the units. Code 36 comes out as three blinks, pause, six blinks. Press Stop again to stop the display. The blinking gives up after five minutes (fifteen on the HGJAA series); press Stop three times within five seconds to bring it back.

What the first group of blinks means

Count the group that repeats on its own, before you press anything.

Codes 33 and 44 do not exist. Cummins left them unassigned on purpose so that the first-level three and four blinks can never be mistaken for a second-level code.

Every documented Onan fault code

Compiled from the operator manuals for the air-cooled KY and KYD sets and for the liquid-cooled HDKCA/HDKCB Quiet Diesel, with each manufacturer definition and the numbers it actually gives. Where a series column is filled in, the code exists on that family and not across the whole range.

14 Over frequency Above 70 Hz for 40 ms, or above 66 Hz for 6 seconds.
15 Under frequency Below 54 Hz for more than 8 seconds.
19 Actuator shorted or open Quiet Diesel Open or shorted governor actuator or harness sensed at startup. Actuator resistance should measure 2.8 to 2.9 ohms.
22 Actuator overload Quiet Diesel The controller held the governor actuator at full duty cycle for 60 consecutive seconds — overload or low engine performance.
24 Faulty engine temperature sender Quiet Diesel After 10 minutes of normal running the controller checked and found an open temperature sender or harness.

32 Low cranking speed / starting fault Air-cooled sets: cranking below 180 rpm for more than 2 seconds. Quiet Diesel: no cranking speed detected at all for 12 seconds.
35 Control card failure (EE checksum) The controller found an EEPROM memory error during its power-up self-test.
36 Engine stopped / mechanical fault The engine stopped without the controller commanding it. On Quiet Diesel sets defined as speed below 1000 rpm for 0.5 seconds.
37 Invalid genset configuration Air-cooled KY / KYD The factory-programmed configuration is not valid. Dealer work — there is nothing to adjust on the set.
38 Overcurrent / field overload Low power factor loads. On the diesel: field voltage above 180 VAC for 10 seconds.
41 Generator rotor fault While flashing the field the controller sensed the rotor circuit shorted to ground, or could not sense field or output voltage.

Codes 33 and 44 are unassigned by design. Codes without a link are controller and board faults whose documented corrective action is a dealer visit; there is no owner-side procedure to add to them.

There is no single Onan fault code list

This is the trap. Cummins publishes a different table per genset family, and the differences are not cosmetic. The air-cooled gasoline and LPG sets — the KY Microlite/Emerald family behind most RV QG units — document nineteen codes and only two first-level blinks, three and four. The liquid-cooled Quiet Diesel sets document a partly different table, add four codes the gasoline sets do not have (19 actuator open or shorted, 22 actuator overload, 24 temperature sender, 57 overprime), and use one and two blinks as first-level faults.

Same number, different fault: code 36 is "Engine Stopped" on the air-cooled sets and "Mechanical Fault" on the Quiet Diesel, where it has a precise definition the gasoline manual never gives — engine speed fell below 1000 rpm for half a second without the controller asking for it. Code 32 is "low cranking speed, under 180 rpm for more than two seconds" on the gasoline sets, but on the diesel it is "starting fault: no cranking speed detected for twelve seconds". Code 31, overspeed above 3400 rpm, appears in the tables of other series and in neither of the two operator manuals above.

So before you act on a number, find out what you own. The plate on the genset carries the model and spec letter — KY, KYD, KV, HDKCA, HGJAA and so on — and the operator manual for that spec is the only table that is binding for your set.

The overcrank number Cummins never settled

Code 4 means the starter turned the engine and it did not fire. How long it cranked before giving up is stated four different ways in Cummins’ own documents: the KY operator manual says "15 to 20 seconds" in its introduction and "exceeded 20 seconds" in its troubleshooting table four pages later — inside the same PDF. The 2019 RV Generator Handbook says 30 seconds. The Quiet Diesel manual says 35 seconds.

For diagnosis it barely matters, and that is worth saying plainly: code 4 is not about the exact second count, it is about fuel, spark and cranking speed. It matters for trusting sources. If a page quotes one of these numbers as the Onan overcrank threshold without naming the series, it copied a table without checking it.

The practical version: on a shared tank the genset pickup tube sits higher than the vehicle engine pickup, so the generator runs dry while the dash gauge still shows fuel. That single fact explains more code 4 and code 36 shutdowns than every electrical cause put together.

The code you are reading may already be history

The controller keeps blinking the last logged fault even after the condition that caused it is gone. Someone tops up the fuel, restarts, sees the light still blinking 3 and 6, and starts hunting a fault that fixed itself.

Treat the code as a log entry, not a live reading. Correct the obvious cause, run the set, and see whether it shuts down again — the next real shutdown will overwrite what you are looking at.

What a dead lamp and a lamp that quits mid-crank are telling you

No light at all is not a code. Cummins lists it separately as faulty connections or no battery voltage — start at the battery terminals and the genset ground, not at the control board.

A lamp that lights, goes out during cranking and leaves the engine stopped is a third case again: an internal short has tripped a self-resetting protective device. That one is documented as a dealer job if it repeats.

Common questions

What does 3 blinks mean on an Onan generator?

Three blinks is a service check: the controller has stored a two-digit code and is waiting for you to ask for it. Press Stop once and the lamp blinks the tens digit, pauses, then the units digit. Three blinks on its own tells you nothing about the fault.

My Onan blinks twice. Is that low oil pressure?

On a liquid-cooled Quiet Diesel, yes — oil pressure under 14 psi for three seconds. On an air-cooled gasoline or LPG set it is not a documented first-level fault at all; those manuals list only three and four blinks. If you are counting two blinks on an air-cooled set, count a full cycle again and watch for the long pause.

Is code 36 an overspeed fault?

No, and this is the most common mix-up in Onan troubleshooting. Overspeed is code 31. On air-cooled sets code 36 means the engine stopped without being told to — usually out of fuel. On Quiet Diesel sets the same number is filed as a mechanical fault, defined as engine speed dropping below 1000 rpm for half a second.

How do I reset an Onan fault code?

There is no reset button, and holding the primer does not clear the log. Fix the cause and run the genset — a successful start cycle is what clears it. Pressing Stop three times within five seconds only restores the blink display after it has timed out; it does not erase anything.

The light kept blinking after I refilled the tank. Is something still broken?

Probably not. The controller replays the last fault it logged regardless of whether the condition still exists. Start the set and let it run — if it stays running, the code you were reading is history.
