What it means
Linear valve failure. The controller detected an open circuit in the linear gas valve control circuit — either before ignition or during normal operation — so it cannot modulate the gas and shuts down. On this heater the gas valve is not a simple on/off solenoid: it modulates to hold the outlet temperature steady, which is why losing it stops the unit outright.
Most likely causes
- White and red wires on the 8-wire plug loose, corroded or unseated most likely
- Connection behind the firewall disturbed or corroded common
- Open winding in the linear valve coil — a genuinely failed valve common
Safe checks you can do yourself
- With the unit powered down, check the white and red wires on the 8-wire plug, and the connections behind the firewall, for a loose or corroded pin.
- Unplug the 8-wire connector and measure the linear valve coil across the white and red wires: Girard gives approximately 85 ohms. An open circuit there is the valve, not the board.
How to reset / clear E7
- Reconnect anything found loose, then power-cycle the heater and run hot water to retry.
- If the 85-ohm reading is absent, the valve is the fault and no reset will clear it.
When to call a technician
The coil measures open or far from 85 ohms — replacing a gas valve is certified-installer work, not an owner repair.
Accuracy notes
The 85-ohm figure is the manufacturer's own and is measured with the 8-wire connector unplugged — measuring it in circuit reads the board as well and will not give that value. E7 is a wiring-or-valve fault; it is not the same as E1, which is a valve that opened correctly but produced no confirmed flame.
