Thetford Refrigerator: “Error code 12”
warning RV refrigerator error codes
What it means
The display board and the power board have lost communication with each other. The two halves of the control system can no longer talk, so the panel cannot command the fridge — and note that this needs a stable 12 V low-current supply to work at all. How you read this code depends on the control panel. An LCD panel shows a spanner symbol with the number next to it. An LED+ panel shows nothing until you ask for it: while the display is blinking, hold all three buttons at once until it stops, and the cooling-level bars that then light up are a binary number — the five bars are worth 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1 from left to right, added together. And note Thetford's own warning: with no 12 V DC at the control board, no error code is shown at all.
Most likely causes
- 12 V low-current supply outside the 10-15 V window most likely
- Resettable fuse tripped and still warm common
- Bent, missing or loose pins in the wiring-loom plug common
- Connector on display board or power board not seated common
- Broken communication cable between the two boards less common
Safe checks you can do yourself
- Check the 12 V low-current supply at the fridge is stable between 10 and 15 V — everything else is pointless if it is not.
- Do Thetford's cool-down step properly: disconnect 12 V and wait a full five minutes so the resettable fuse can cool, then reconnect. A quick off-on does not do this.
- Inspect the wiring-loom plug for pins that are missing, bent or pushed back, and reseat the connectors at both the display board and the power board.
- Check continuity of the four-wire communication cable between the boards if the connectors are sound.
How to reset / clear Error code 12
- Disconnect the 12 V supply and leave it disconnected for five minutes.
- Reconnect and see whether code 12 returns; if it does, move on to the connectors rather than repeating the reset.
When to call a technician
Supply, connectors and cable all check out but the boards still will not talk — that is a board-level fault.
Accuracy notes
The number alone is not enough — Thetford uses different numbering per product family. This table is the N3000 and N4000 absorption series (codes 1-13). The older Premium LCD line (N90-N180, built 2005-2012) has its own, different 1-14 table in which the same numbers mean other things, and the T2000 compressor fridges use a third scheme again. Model numbers are no help either: N90, N97, N100, N104, N109, N112 and N145 appear in both the Deluxe line and the Premium LCD line, so a bare model number cannot decide which table applies. Check which family your fridge belongs to before acting on a number.
