Thetford Refrigerator: “Error code 4”
warning RV refrigerator error codes
What it means
The 12 V heating element is off when it should be on. The board is calling for DC heating but does not see the current it expects, so cooling on 12 V does not happen. How you read this code depends on the control panel. An LCD panel shows a spanner symbol with the number next to it. An LED+ panel shows nothing until you ask for it: while the display is blinking, hold all three buttons at once until it stops, and the cooling-level bars that then light up are a binary number — the five bars are worth 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1 from left to right, added together. And note Thetford's own warning: with no 12 V DC at the control board, no error code is shown at all.
Most likely causes
- Blown 20 A DC fuse on the power board most likely
- Loose or corroded connection at the heating element common
- DC heating element failed (open or out of tolerance) common
- Supply cable too thin or too long for the current less common
Safe checks you can do yourself
- Check the 20 A DC fuse on the power board first — it is the cheapest and most common finding.
- Inspect the connections at the element and restore anything loose or corroded.
- With the fridge switched off, measure the element resistance and compare against Thetford's table: roughly 0.90-1.16 ohm for N3080 to N3115, and 0.67-0.86 ohm for the larger N3145 and N3150.
- If it draws current at all, expect roughly 15 A on large fridges and 11 A on small ones — a long way below that points at the element.
How to reset / clear Error code 4
- Replace the fuse or fix the connection, then switch the fridge off and on.
- Select 12 V operation deliberately and confirm the code stays away under load.
When to call a technician
Fuse and connections are good and the element measures outside Thetford's resistance window — the heating element needs replacing.
Accuracy notes
The number alone is not enough — Thetford uses different numbering per product family. This table is the N3000 and N4000 absorption series (codes 1-13). The older Premium LCD line (N90-N180, built 2005-2012) has its own, different 1-14 table in which the same numbers mean other things, and the T2000 compressor fridges use a third scheme again. Model numbers are no help either: N90, N97, N100, N104, N109, N112 and N145 appear in both the Deluxe line and the Premium LCD line, so a bare model number cannot decide which table applies. Check which family your fridge belongs to before acting on a number.
