Thetford Refrigerator: “Error code 6”
warning RV refrigerator error codes
What it means
The 12 V supply is outside the permitted window. This is a supply fault, not a fridge fault: the board measures the voltage arriving at the fridge and refuses to run outside its range. Thetford also warns that if you selected 12 V manually, the fridge will not switch to another energy source by itself when the engine is off. How you read this code depends on the control panel. An LCD panel shows a spanner symbol with the number next to it. An LED+ panel shows nothing until you ask for it: while the display is blinking, hold all three buttons at once until it stops, and the cooling-level bars that then light up are a binary number — the five bars are worth 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1 from left to right, added together. And note Thetford's own warning: with no 12 V DC at the control board, no error code is shown at all.
Most likely causes
- Voltage drop in the 12 V supply run — cable too thin or too long, or a poor connection most likely
- Blown 20 A 12 V fuse on the power board common
- Battery flat, or supply sagging under the heater load common
- Solar charge regulator pushing the rail out of range less common
Safe checks you can do yourself
- Measure the 12 V supply at the fridge while it is trying to heat, not at the battery and not at rest — the heating element is the biggest load in the vehicle after the starter.
- Check the 20 A 12 V fuse on the power board.
- If the vehicle has solar, disconnect the panel and see whether code 6 disappears. Thetford has this as an explicit branch, and a regulator that spikes is a genuine cause.
- Remember the manual-mode trap: with 12 V selected by hand and the engine off, the fridge will not fall back to gas or mains on its own.
How to reset / clear Error code 6
- Restore a supply inside the permitted range, then switch the fridge off and on.
When to call a technician
The supply measures inside range at the fridge under load, the fuse is good and solar is ruled out, yet code 6 persists — the power board is misreading.
Accuracy notes
Thetford states two different lower limits for this code. The English troubleshooting deck says "lower than 10 V or higher than 15 V"; the German edition of the same N3000 document says "niedriger 11,5 V oder höher 15 V". So between 10 V and 11.5 V the two manuals disagree about whether you have a fault. Treat anything under about 11.5 V at the fridge as suspect regardless of which manual you hold. The number alone is not enough — Thetford uses different numbering per product family. This table is the N3000 and N4000 absorption series (codes 1-13). The older Premium LCD line (N90-N180, built 2005-2012) has its own, different 1-14 table in which the same numbers mean other things, and the T2000 compressor fridges use a third scheme again. Model numbers are no help either: N90, N97, N100, N104, N109, N112 and N145 appear in both the Deluxe line and the Premium LCD line, so a bare model number cannot decide which table applies. Check which family your fridge belongs to before acting on a number.
