Dometic RV fridge blinking light: what the flash count means
When the indicator light on a Dometic compressor fridge flashes, the fridge is naming the fault it detected. The number of flashes is the message.
How to count the flashes
Each flash lasts a quarter of a second. After the series comes a pause, and the whole sequence repeats every four seconds. Watch one full cycle, count the pulses, then wait for the pause to be sure you did not start counting halfway through. On CRX models the light is red; on NRX models the same indicator flashes orange. A fridge "flashing orange" and one "flashing red" are reading from the same table.

Low voltage
The supply voltage at the fridge is outside the set range. On a 12 V system Dometic gives cut-out at 10.4 V and cut-in at 11.7 V.
Fan current — or too many start attempts
Either the fan load on the electronics is above 1 A, or the compressor/fan has been started too often in a short time. The second cause is the common one in an RV.
The motor does not start
The rotor is jammed, or the pressure difference in the cooling system is too high (above 5 bar) to start against. The compressor never turns.
Speed too low
The motor started but cannot hold its minimum speed of 1,850 rpm, typically because the cooling system is overloaded.
Electronics unit overheating
The compressor electronics exceeded their safe temperature and shut down. Self-clearing once they cool.
Temperature sensor fault
A steady light rather than a flashing one points at the temperature sensor.
Dometic prints slightly different tables per model: the CRX50/65/80 table lists "too many start attempts" under two flashes, the CRX110 and CRX140 table lists only the fan-current cause.
Which fridges this covers
This flash-code table belongs to the DC compressor fridges — the CRX 50/65/80/110/140 and NRX 35–130 families, which run on 12 or 24 V and use a BD-type compressor with its electronics mounted on the compressor itself.
Dometic absorption fridges are a different machine with a different language: they show letter-and-number codes such as E03 or W01 on a display instead of flashing a single light. Those codes are listed further down this page.
The one check that explains most of these codes
Four of the five flash codes can be produced by the same underlying problem: not enough voltage arriving at the fridge. One flash is the voltage cut-out itself. Two flashes appear when a sagging supply makes the compressor abort and retry until the start-attempt counter trips. Three flashes can be a motor that cannot build enough starting torque. Four flashes is a motor that started but cannot hold speed.
So measure the DC voltage at the fridge's own terminals while the compressor is running — not at the battery, and not at rest. A battery sitting at 12.6 V can arrive at the fridge as 10.2 V under load if the cable is undersized or the run is long. This is the check almost everyone skips and the one that ends most of these diagnoses.
For reference, the BD-type electronics used in these fridges are specified for roughly 2.5 m of 2.5 mm² (AWG 13) cable at 12 V, 4 m of 4 mm², 6 m of 6 mm² and 10 m of 10 mm² — measured over the whole path, positive plus negative return. Most RV installations are longer than owners assume.
The second check: airflow
Four and five flashes are both overload codes. The compressor compartment in a built-in installation runs hotter than the cabin around it, and the electronics module sits on the compressor — in the hottest spot there is.
Confirm the unit has its specified clearance, that there is a low intake and a high outlet so warm air can actually leave, and that the condenser fins and fan are free of dust. In hot weather, a moderate temperature setting keeps the unit off the limit rather than running continuously against it.
Common questions
My Dometic fridge flashes orange, not red. Is that a different fault?
No. CRX models use a red indicator and NRX models an orange one. The flash counts and their meanings are identical — count the flashes and read the same table.
Does one flash mean my battery is dead?
Not necessarily. One flash means the voltage measured at the fridge electronics left the permitted window. A healthy battery feeding the fridge through undersized or overlong cable produces the same code, which is why the measurement has to be taken at the fridge under load.
How long should I wait before restarting after three flashes?
Five to ten minutes. Three flashes often just means the pressures in the sealed system had not equalised yet after a switch-off. If it starts normally after the wait, nothing is broken.
The light is on constantly instead of flashing. What does that mean?
A steady indicator is not a flash code. On these fridges it points at a temperature sensor fault rather than one of the numbered faults.
How do I reset a Dometic fridge error?
Most of these codes are protection cut-outs rather than lockouts, so they clear themselves once the condition goes away — voltage back in range, electronics cooled down, pressures equalised. Disconnecting power for a minute forces a fresh start, but if the code returns immediately the fault is still present.
